I started working on my interior design degree in 1990. After completing two years of study, my husband’s job transferred us to northern Ohio. That is where our two boys were born. In 1997 we transferred back to southwestern Ohio to be closer to family. After our youngest son was in school full-time I went back to school to finish my degree. In 2004 I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design degree from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.
In 2008 I received my Associate Kitchen and Bath Design certification (AKBD) from the National Kitchen and Bath Association. This test was harder than four years at Miami University. There are nine text books which incorporate everything in residential construction. Starting with what’s involved in constructing footers when building a house all the way to the roofing material on the house and everything in-between. The test is computer generated. I needed to be prepared for anything from those nine text books.
I accepted a position with a home improvement retailer as a Design Consultant in 2006. I am responsible for assessing client’s needs, educating and guiding their design decisions, evaluating the scope of the project, and integrating their wants and needs into a 20-20 design layout while staying within their budget. As a project coordinator, I guide the client’s decisions in areas other than cabinets and countertops, including recommendations for appliances, flooring, window treatments, lighting choices, and coordinating color selection for their space. I also conduct the kitchen design related workshops and clinics.
In 2007, I accepted a part-time position as an Adjunct Instructor at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. I teach Interior Design I, Advanced Interior Design II, and Design Basics 2D. These courses are design studio format and are comprised of introduction to the interior design profession, kitchen design, and 2D design fundamentals applied to visual communications, print and the arts.
I accepted a part-time position as an Adjunct Instructor at Art Institute of Ohio in Mason Ohio in 2008. I taught History of Design I. This course is a lecture course on the history of western architecture and interior design from per-historic times to colonial and federal America.
From 2000 to 2003, I was an instructor at Miami University, Continuing Education, Business, and Industry, Middletown, Ohio. The classes I taught were considered adult education classes. I generated and instructed several interior design courses which included developing students’ knowledge of a design concept, space planning, color, textiles, wall coverings, flooring, windows treatments, lighting, and accessorizing; as well as, creating and instructing the faux finishing workshop where a variety of painting and texturing techniques were explored.
While I was teaching part-time at Miami Middletown I also taught the same classes at Butler Technology and Career Development Schools, Hamilton, Ohio.
